Charleen's work situates a human sense of time within timeless areas of natural beauty, currently focusing on Special Areas of Conservation in the Dublin Mountain’s blanket bog along the Old Military Road, including the Feathered Beds and the Liffey Head Bog. She is creator, co-artist and curator of The Peatlands, an immersive installation highlighting the biodiversity and wild beauty of the blanket bog habitat found in the Dublin and Wicklow Mountains.
A transmedia essay, developed with sound artist Lisa-Dowling Scott and contributing artists, The Peatlands is narrated through the voice of the natural and built worlds. This collaborative work combines animated collage, field recordings, sound sculpture, photography and video. It explores the ecological treasure that is The Peatlands and amplifies the extraordinary species found within. The installation asserts the Rights of Nature in and of itself, and the benefits humanity gains from ensuring its protection. The installation features Charleen's animated collages, made by blending vulnerable, earthy mediums of charcoal and pastel to form the backdrops. Once digitised, these drawings were merged with images from the national archives to form a tableau of human and wildlife movements along The Old Military Road. The installation also features
Images from award-winning nature photographer and author, Tina Claffey feature in The Peatlands Installation. Tina explores the wondrous bogs of Ireland with her macro lens, capturing the minuteness of the extraordinary plant and animal species that have adapted to the unique environment of the peatlands in order to survive.
